ACTIVE Tour of ‘listed’ Macintosh Court

AN ARCHITECTURAL TOUR of Macintosh Court Sheltered Housing Scheme, formerly named Leigham Court, Lambeth's first ‘Listed’, purpose built modernist sheltered housing scheme.

This special Tour is part of “A MODERNIST GEM”: THE BATTLE TO SAVE LEIGHAM COURT SHELTERED HOUSING SCHEME – An Exhibition and series of Events, celebrating the scheme’s Campaign and Grade II ‘Listing’ by residents, led by Co-chair Mrs Anne Okokon.

HISTORY

Tours of, previously named Leigham Court, were initiated from the start of the 2013 campaign to save the sheltered housing scheme. Residents were enthusiastic about raising awareness of Macintosh Courts' unique Architecture, which is modernist and brutalist in style.

Following a campaign by residents, Macintosh Court achieved a Grade II ‘Listing’, by Historic England, as a building of historical significance. It was then re-named after its pioneering female architect Kate Macintosh.

As one of the first of a slew of Housing Campaigns – Macintosh Court was one of the few Housing Campaigns to be Co-Chaired by a British African Caribbean female resident, Mrs Anne Okokon. The scheme became an architectural cause célèbre. It has since become a model for contemporary ‘Listing’, by beleaguered residents of buildings at risk, communities, architects and housing activists.

Summer is the best time to witness how Macintosh Court emphasises it’s inter - connecting, walkways, around a pattern of gardens and green spaces.
