“A MODERNIST GEM”: The Battle for Leigham Court Sheltered Housing Scheme: EXHIBITION

24 June - 12 August

9:00 -22:00

This EXHIBITION and the community which inspired it, embodies this year's London Festival of Architecture’s theme: ACT!

“A MODERNIST GEM” documents the 'three - year battle', in which a group of diverse elders led by British-African Caribbean Co-Chair, Mrs Anne Okokon, joined forces with community activists and architectural mavericks, in an attempt to prevent demolition and restore their "Modernist Gem", of a Sheltered Housing Scheme - changing architectural history
.
The Exhibition also acknowledges the wave of Public Housing Campaigns heralded, in the wake of Leigham Court’s Campaign. Insight will be gained into how these more recent Housing Campaigns have led the way in ‘next level’ Activism and Contemporary Citizenship.

Modern-day community fables, being told, through photography, ephemera and multimedia. These are stories of euphoria and the dark heart of human kind, relayed with creativity, humour, and the starkest of realism...

“A MODERNIST GEM”: THE BATTLE TO SAVE LEIGHAM COURT SHELTERED HOUSING SCHEME, will give voice to Residents, Architects, Housing Activists, Filmmakers, Journalists and Community Organisers.
