Texture in London



London is a wonderfully eclectic city. And the texture of our buildings lends something to the wider fabric of the city.

In the series of lockdowns over the past few years you may have found yourself, like us, missing the feel and texture of the city.

We asked some of our friends and partners to tell us about their favourite textures in London.  Click on each video to hear their favourite textures.

1 Tom Bloxham: Hammered Concrete, Barbican

For his selection, Tom selected the hammered concrete of the Barbican Tom Bloxham MBE is the chairman and founder of Urban Splash.

2 Marcie Larizadeh: Tiling, London Underground

For her selection, Marcie selected Tiling, as it appears within the London Underground. Marcie Larizadeh is Associate Director at Squire & Partners, specialising in bespoke and crafted projects in London and internationally.

3 Jim Biddulph: London Stock Brick

For his selection, Jim selected London Stock Brick. Jim Biddulph is a materials, colour & interiors consultant living and working in Margate, UK.

4 Carolyn Larkin: Roach Bed Portland Stone, The Smithson Building

For her selection, Carolyn selected the Roach bed Portland Stone of The Smithson Building. Carolyn Larkin is Founding Director at Caro Communications.

5 Thomas Bryans: Timber Cobbles, Belvedere Road

For his selection, Thomas selected timber cobbles, such as those seen on Belvedere Road in front of County Hall. Thomas Bryans is Director and Co-Founder of IF_DO.

6 Michael Woodford: London Tree Canopy

For his selection, Michael selected the London tree canopy. Michael Woodford is Architect and Director at White Arkitekter.

7 Janet Morris: London Stock Brick, Shad Thames

For her selection, Janet selected the London stock brick of the warehouses in Shad Thames. Janet Morris is Chair of STAMP (Shad Thames Area Management Partnership).

8 Rob Wilson: Rustication

For his selection, Rob selected rustication. Rob Wilson is Architecture Editor at The Architects' Journal.

9 Karsten Huneck: Concrete ramp, Turbine Hall

For his selection, Karsten selected the Concrete ramp at the Turbine Hall, Tate Modern. Karsten Huneck is Director of KHBT Architects and Professor for Architecture at Berlin International University of Applied Sciences.

10 Kay Hughes: Red Faience Tiles, London Tube Stations

For her selection, Kay selected the red faience tiles on London Tube Stations. Kay Hughes is Design Director at HS2.

11 Harry Parr: St Pauls + Jelly!

For his selection, Harry selected the carved frieze of St Pauls + Jelly! Harry Parr is Co-founder of Bompas & Parr.

12 Owen Wainhouse: Textured Pavements

For his selection, Owen selected textured pavements. Owen Wainhouse is Deputy Director of the LFA.

13 Naila Yousuf: Faience Tiling, London Underground Stations

For her selection, Naila selected the faience tiling of London underground stations. Naila Yousuf is Partner at Wright & Wright Architects.

14 Shawn Adams: Light, Stephen Lawrence Centre

For his selection, Shawn selected light, as seen at the Stephen Lawrence Centre by Adjaye Associates. Shawn Adams is a writer, speaker and architectural designer. He is also a founding partner of POoR Collective and an alumnus of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, now known as Blueprint for All.

15 Joe Watson: Aluminium Door Handles, Southbank Centre

For his selection, Joe selected the aluminium door handles of the Southbank Centre. Joe Watson is Director of Public Programmes at Sotheby's Institute of Art.

16 Eliza Grosvenor: Glazed Ceramic Tiles, Greenwich

For her selection, Eliza selected glazed ceramic tiles, as seen in the Greenwich Foot Tunnel. Eliza Grosvenor is Project Manager at the London Festival of Architecture.

17 Anna Liu: River Thames

For her selection, Anna selected the River Thames. Anna Liu is Director of Tonkin Liu.

18 Patrick Dubeck: Concrete Pavement

For his selection, Patrick selected the humble concrete pavement. Patrick Dubeck is Head of Regeneration at the Greater London Authority.
