Innovation through Sustainable Materials in the Royal Docks

23 June 2022

10:00 -17:00

Join us for a hands-on, interactive session exploring innovative and carbon neutral sustainable materials at the heart of the Royal Docks!

As part of the London Festival of Architecture 2022, the University of East London UEL, in collaboration with Grimshaw and with the support of the Royal Docks and Tate & Lyle, is organising a hands-on session exploring the potential of carbon neutral innovative materials in architecture and design. This one-day workshop will enable participants to explore agricultural by-products such as hemp, sugar cane or straw, mixed with different binders including locally sourced clay, as new building materials. Samples will be created and cast to additionally investigate the opportunity to create interlocking and integrated structures.

The workshop will be led by lecturers and architects from UEL and Grimshaw, and it will be followed by an interactive session on carbon footprint calculation on the materials developed during the workshop. The day will close with an exhibition of the work produced.

All materials and tools required for the workshop will be provided, although we invite participants to bring their own agricultural by-products for material exploration.

We look forward to welcome you to this exciting session!
